About Shakil Butt

Multi: a combined suffix from the Latin multus, “much, many” and mel-, “strong, great, numerous”. Self-proclaimed “plate spinner” and “hero” of HR, Shakil Butt lists Leadership Specialist, D&I Consultant, Non-Executive Director, Visiting Lecturer, Writer, and Public Speaker as his various titles. He should win the Nobel Prize for Multi-tasking, if such an accolade existed. We’d vote for him. Alongside multi-tasking, Shakil strategises his organisations and consultancies in a multi-faith, multi-cultural and multi-ethnic direction. With many titles and strong, great leadership, Shakil’s specialism in leadership is a treasured asset at TCM.

Shakil Butt has extensive leadership experience and was the Director for Human Resources and Organisational Development at one of the largest global relief and development charities in the UK working in over 40 countries, with a very diverse and culturally rich workforce. The charity went through rapid change and growth during which time he led an award-winning team, was shortlisted as HR Director of the Year, and awarded HR’s Most Influential for 4 years consecutively. He has most recently won the accolade again of HR’s top 30 Most Influential Thinkers 2023.

Originally working as a qualified accountant, Shakil spent his early career in the private sector before later moving into the charitable sector. In 2009 Shakil had a career change and became qualified as a HR professional. These two professional disciplines mean that he has a more holistic perspective being adept with the two most important factors in every organisation, its people, and its financial resources. Shakil particularly enjoys developing managers and is an accredited ACL and ILM trainer as well as being a qualified MBTI practitioner in his capacity now as a freelance consultant.

As a non-executive director of the CIPD member, Shakil brings challenge and support to the senior leadership team working strategically, managing risk, compliance and safeguarding the assets of the charity to meets its legal obligations. In addition, Shakil is the Honorary Treasurer for the CIPD, chairing the Audit Committee and sits on the Remuneration Committee.

Shakil is a lecturer in Strategic Human Resource Management and is a regular writer and contributor featuring in several HR publications and speaks at HR conferences internationally on various topics ranging from strategic HR to Values. Shakil has reviewed books by leading HR practitioners and sits on several judging panels for HR best practice awards.

As a member of the regional leadership team working with Mosaic, part of the Prince’s Trust, Shakil works with young people in education to raise their aspirations, self-confidence, and employability. Shakil was awarded Mentor of the Year for his contributions to date as well as being nominated for BVSC Community Volunteer of the Year.
